Keep the axe straight

Bring the axe straight back behind your head and throw it straight forward, keeping your wrist and your elbow locked. Release when your arm is extended, parallel to the ground. Imagine throwing a soccer ball for a two-handed throw and a baseball for a one-handed throw.

Should I tip at axe throwing? Tipping policies may vary, but if you had a great experience and received excellent service from the staff at the axe throwing venue, it is generally appreciated to leave a tip as a gesture of gratitude for their assistance and guidance throughout your session.

Just about anybody athletic enough to throw an axe can throw one. Hitting a target so that the cutting edge is in the right position, and throwing it hard enough to do some serious damage, requires a LOT of practice and some muscle as well.

1 game consists of 3 matches. Each match consists of 5 throws per participant. So each participant will get 15 throws per game. Whoever gets the best 2/3 matches wins the game.

The activity of axe throwing does involve a dangerous weapon, so safety is always a concern. While injuries aren't very common, they can occur.

You don't need to be extremely strong to throw an axe. This is something that most anyone can participate in whether they are young or old.

Axe Throwing Safety

Safety should always be the number one priority when throwing axes. You should make sure before you throw there is never anyone between you and the target and you have a minimum of a six foot radius around you that is clear of any other people.

We recommend sturdy yet flexible pants, like your favorite pair of jeans. Bending over to pick up your axe is a reality of axe throwing. Belts are awesome: we don't want any plumber's crack action happening. Pants are a better choice over shorts or skirts; covering more of your skin means less risk of minor injury.

The length of time your group gets is dependent upon your group size: 2 to 3 people throw for 30 minutes. 4 to 6 people throw for 45 minutes. 7 or more people throw for 60 minutes.

An hour seems pretty short, but the expert coaches will run you through safety and how-tos in the first ten minutes. Throwing an axe doesn't take much time, so an hour allows for lots of throws for everyone.

Is axe throwing risky? ›

It's pretty darn safe. Even running your hand on the metal edges of the axes won't cut you. These little hatchets are relatively dull and made for throwing at a porous wooden board that's 12ft away; they're not for cutting down trees or being a handyman — and thank goodness for that!

We recommend that each participant has 3 throws in a row, each one taking about 1 minute to complete. If there are 4 people sharing a lane then each person will get 3 mins of throwing followed by 9 mins of watching. Each 30 minute session has around 25 mins of throwing time.

Flare your hands out and follow through with your arms like you are throwing dust or mud at the wall. Keep your elbows straighter. Move your grip lower on the axe. Lean forward when releasing the axe, throw hands toward the target and follow through bringing your arms down past your legs.

Every night starts with warm-up time so everyone can get comfortable. During the regular season, usually the first 7 weeks, each player gets 4 randomly assigned matches throughout the night. Each match consists of 3 game of 5 throws (for a total of 15 throws). Most nights last about 2 hours.
