Police asked motorists to observe the speed limit, to refrain from drinking and driving and to wear seat belts. Republicans held their majority in the Indiana Legislature, even with. the loss of two key committee chairmen and a handful of representatives who rode President Reagan's coattails in 1980. Democrats, meanwhile, elected a father team to the Indiana House. Former Sen.

Burnett Bauer and his son, Patrick Bauer, will represent side-by-side districts in the South Bend area. Results in the 125 legislative races were extremely slow in coming. Yet without the final numbers, Republicans conceded to Associated Press that they lost the eastern Indiana Senate seat held by Marlin McDaniel of Richmond and House seats held by Bobby Pruett of Madison, Ted Craig of Columbus, and Steve Johnson of Kokomo. Going into yesterday's election, Republicans had a 35-15 majority in the Senate and a 63-37 advantage in the House. Once all the votes were Baby May Have Been Abused A 5-month-old girl has been placed in protective custody at Community Hospital after doctors determined the child had a fractured skull, broken arms, legs, nose and collarbone and other injuries.

Police said physicians at the hospital suspect the child, Lisa Ashly, is the victim of beatings. The child's parents, James and Carol Ashley, Jacksonville, were in Indianapolis visiting relatives. Hospital officials notified police after the infant was taken to the hospital by relatives. Indianapolis Police investigator Thomas Wininger said doctors reported the baby's broken bones were in different stages of healing, and only the collarbone injury appeared to have received medical attention. counted, the margin of GOP control was expected to drop to 33 seats, maybe less, in the Senate, and perhaps as low as 55 seats in the House. McDaniel, a political maverick who had a knack for latching on to highly visible issues, was a vocal advocate for tougher lobbying laws and reform of the Indiana Alcoholic Beverage Commission. He was indicted in July on charges of perjury, criminal mischief and false reporting in an investigation unrelated to his official duties as a legislator, and it's uncertain what impact that had on his re-election bid. Pruett, Craig and Johnson were swept in by the Reagan landslide of 1980. Warner, chairman of the House Education Committee, was seen as a victim of high unemployment in the recreational vehicle industry.

GOP incumbents Richard McIntyre of Bedford and Richard Wathen of Jeffersonville appeared to have held their seats, despite concerns they would go down in a Democratic backlash over the economy. Democrats. who had hoped to regain control of the House for the first time since 1977, were resigned to another two years in the minority. In the Senate, Democratic incumbent Wayne Townsend of Hartford City led his Republican challenger Michael Boonstra of Markle, while Republican Sen. James Abraham of Anderson pulled out a victory in a tight race with Democrat William McCarty of Anderson.

Anthony; Illse Lewis, Pame- Conducted By GRIFF NIBLACK Although Halloween is past and largely forgotten, we think it deserves some comment, mostly because it was the quietest ever observed in the years spent in our home.

There was enough time between doorbell rings for one to read a complete story in a paper without interruption. However, the Halloween of 1982 had one very interesting feature. The youngest and tiniest trick or treater this Halloween watcher had ever observed was at the door. He wasn't, over 6 months old and he was in the arms of his mother, taking a wideeyed interest in everything. He was accompanied by an older sister who was surely not much more than 2.

The little girl I guess a girl because she was masquerading, gently took two pieces of the candy offered and politely put one into a bag held by the mother which was the baby's share of the treat. Then the three disappeared into the dark, all smiling warmly. Pepper, the dog, enjoyed the evening as it gave her the opportunity to welcome visitors with joyous barks. But even her friendliness was jarred when the door opened on a young monster with a horrible face. The little dog shrank back in sudden EBEN STEBBIN SAYS: It's an unhappy thought for television watchers but the election commercials will soon be replaced by The Twelve Days of Christmas.

NO BETTING Horse sense is A rare acumen. No sane horse Bets on a human. Mildred N. Hoyer Mack McGinnis says the most common cause of car sickness is the sticker price. Hoosier Homespun alarm and the tone of welcome barking became a little bit terror stricken.

Each Halloween that comes brings with it chuckling memories of long gone days when this writer was a boy and he and a cousin, each about 8, were trying to attach a ticktack device to the doors of homes in the neighborhood. Our efforts were suddenly ended when the door burst open and a man came out swatting our behinds with a broom. It turned out that he recognized us and so we went into the house and had popcorn. We hope the little trick or treater in his mother's arms can grow to a boyhood where such petty mischief can be enjoyed. But by that time maybe Halloweens will have become events of the past.

If so, it will be a sorry development. You'll Like Facilities and Costs at Memorial Park Cemetery Conveniently Carefully Located Maintained Perpetually Come See, Endowed COMPARE 9350 East Washington St. 46229 Phone 898-4462 For Prices.
