As you rush through the bustling terminal at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS), catching a flight or returning from a trip, it’s easy to overlook the intricate machinery that keeps this dynamic airport running smoothly. Behind every landing and takeoff, a dedicated team works tirelessly to ensure the airport is safe, efficient, and inviting. This responsibility rests with the Field Maintenance Division, a group of unsung heroes who operate behind the scenes to ensure AUS not only remains operational at all times, but also appears effortlessly welcoming to travelers.

Recently, we had the opportunity to sit down with Chris Carter, a seasoned leader in the Field Maintenance Division with nearly 30 years of experience. His journey is not just about managing tasks and maintenance schedules; it’s about creating a safe, efficient, and pleasant airport experience for all.

Diving into the Divisions: Airside to Landside and Beyond

The Field Maintenance Division is divided into four key areas, each with its own set of responsibilities that are critical to airport operations.

  • Airside Maintenance: This team is the guardian of everything within the Air Operations Area (AOA), which includes the terminal apron, runways, and taxiways, and extends all the way to the South Terminal apron. Airside Maintenance ensures compliance with FAA regulations and works to keep AUS’s operating certificates intact. From mowing critical areas and managing drainage systems to handling pavement maintenance and trash patrol, they’re on it. When winter weather looms, their robust plan ensures the airfield remains operational, functional, and safe.
  • Landside Maintenance: As the group responsible for AUS’s curb appeal, Landside Maintenance focuses on the public, non-secure side of the airport. Aesthetics are a top priority for this team, as they manage landscaping, flowerbeds, public roadways, parking lot maintenance, and preventative maintenance programs. The team also focuses on conducting irrigation repairs and pressure washing to keep things looking fresh and clean. Their overnight sweeper duty ensures airport roadways remain pristine with minimal traffic disruption, and their winter program ensures the traveling public’s safety by applying chemicals to elevated roadways.
  • Motor Pool: This team keeps all AUS vehicles and equipment in top condition. “We have a highly efficient preventative maintenance program,” Chris shares proudly. “We’re proactive in identifying which vehicles need maintenance each week through reports from our City fleet system.” The Motor Pool team’s diligence minimizes downtime, ensuring that AUS is always ready for action.
  • Sign Shop: The artisans of the division, the Sign Shop team takes care of regulatory signs, primarily on the public side of the airport. With the ability to create wayfinding and construction signs, they can reproduce any sign based on user needs. They’re also responsible for handling static signs on the airfield.

In total, the Field Maintenance Division comprises 49 employees, including heavy equipment operators, supervisors for each section, and a number of skilled technicians. Chris is quick to emphasize the teamwork that makes it all possible: “I’m only as good as my team, and their dedication and support has been invaluable throughout my career.”

The Heart of Field Maintenance: A Day in the Life

We spoke with Chris about what a typical day looks like for this crucial team.

“Every day starts with a set of prioritized work orders,” Chris begins, outlining the proactive steps the team takes to stay ahead of the game. Airfield Maintenance teams meet with Airside Operations, while the Landside Maintenance group engages in planning and scheduling meetings that include Terminal Operations. Supervisors then meet with their coordinators and operators to discuss the day’s work plan. Once a new request comes in, the team regroups to assess timing and resources, ensuring every staff member knows exactly what to expect and where to be.

This meticulous planning is the backbone of the Field Maintenance Division’s success. Whether they’re maintaining the vast network of runways and taxiways or ensuring the aesthetics of public spaces, Chris’s team works like a well-oiled machine.

Navigating Challenges and Embracing Innovation

The challenges faced by Airside Maintenance are unique and critical to aircraft operations. Preventative maintenance and a proactive approach are key to their success. Chris describes their strategy: “We have weekly meetings with the Airside Operations group, who provide another set of eyes to identify potential issues. If any problems fall within FAA regulations, we address them immediately.” The team maintains a constant state of readiness, operating as if a certification inspection could occur on any given day to ensure the airfield remains in top condition.

For the Motor Pool, precision and prevention are crucial. “There isn't one particular issue that pops up consistently,” Chris explains. “Anything mechanical will eventually break, but we focus on performing maintenance before problems occur.” This foresight minimizes disruptions and keeps AUS running smoothly.

Safety and efficiency are fundamental to airport operations, and Field Maintenance prioritizes these principles through thorough planning and effective communication. Chris notes, “Our division works closely with other airport teams to ensure that maintenance activities align with overall airport operations.” Regular coordination and a shared commitment to excellence help maintain a safe and efficient airport environment.

A Career Built on Passion and Dedication

Chris Carter’s journey in the Field Maintenance Division is a testament to his passion, perseverance, and deep love for his work. Starting nearly three decades ago as a temporary employee, Chris’s career has been defined by his willingness to seize opportunities. Early in his career, an executive shared a piece of advice that has guided him throughout the years: “If you see something you’re interested in, no matter what division it’s in, don’t be afraid to go for it.” Chris began his career at the old Robert Mueller Municipal Airport, and since then, he has become a pillar of the AUS community.

What does Chris love most about his job? “The people I work with,” he says, without hesitation. “Our employees are a joy to work with, and many of my coworkers have been here for over 20 years. There’s a strong sense of commitment and a common goal to remain in the same division.” This camaraderie and shared dedication make the Field Maintenance Division more than just a team; they’re a family working together to keep AUS thriving.

As Chris reflects on his nearly three decades of service, he smiles. “Field Maintenance works with virtually every division at AUS, and this collaboration keeps my job interesting and rewarding. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Chris Carter and his team at the Field Maintenance Division have been a cornerstone of AUS, bringing dedication, innovation, and a genuine pride in their work. We are deeply grateful for their years of hard work and the lasting impact they've made on the airport.

Stay tuned for more behind-the-scenes glimpses in future editions of our blog, where we'll continue to explore the many facets of what makes AUS thrive!
